$165,000 Goal

The mission of the Motor Mill Foundation of Clayton County, Iowa is to protect and preserve the architectural integrity, history, natural beauty and serenity of the Motor Mill site and its surroundings and to develop appropriate uses and interpretation as a regional treasure for the benefit of future generations.

The Foundation is currently working to secure match funds for restoration of the 1870s limestone Inn.  The county was awarded a Rural Heritage Revitalization Grant of $125,000 to kick start the project. Restoration plans include preservation of historical components including structural elements that place the Inn on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Inn (est. 1870) was flooded in 1991 and 2008.  Plans include flood-proofing the main floor, and installing new mechanical systems. The Inn will welcome visitors of the Motor Mill site, with meeting rooms and overnight accommodations. Funds will partially cover architecture fees, construction costs, furnishings, displays and exhibits.

The Inn once housed customers of the Motor gristmill. Later, it became a farm home. The rehabilitation project will protect the Inn from floods, and add ventilation to alleviate moisture damage.

The Motor Mill Historic Site, a monument to northeast Iowa’s ever changing agricultural industry, includes six preserved limestone structures.  Find the Motor Mill Historic Site as you travel the River Bluffs Scenic Byway; the Turkey River Recreational Corridor-An Iowa Great Place; the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area; and the Great River Road, An All-American Road.
