The Allamakee County Community Foundation is thrilled to announce that the Alice Hermeier Foundation will triple any gift to the Allamakee County Community Foundation on Great Give Day with a match of up to $10,000 to help bring Vision to Learn to the Allamakee Community School District and the Postville School District.
A gift of $10 becomes $30 thanks to the Hermeier family. We are asking for your help in capturing this generous match!
Vision to Learn is the largest school-based vision program, delivering a mobile optometric clinic to schools to provide students with vision screenings, eye exams and glasses at no cost to them or their families. Vision to Learn launched operations in Iowa in 2017, serving Postville and Waukon shortly thereafter.
Every two years, Vision to Learn provides vision screenings, eye exams, and two free pairs of glasses to students who need them in Allamakee County. Since 2017, Vision to Learn has examined nearly 900 local students and provided glasses to 818 students.
2023-24 Impacts
At Allamakee Community School District
- 177 students were screened
- 84 students received eye exams
- 82 students received two pair of glasses
At Postville School District
- 586 students received vision screenings
- 250 received eye exams and
- 223 received two pair of glasses
While this service is complimentary to families, it isn’t without cost. Opticians, a mobile screening clinic, glasses and other expenses add up. Finding a doctor who will spend time away from a practice to work in the mobile clinic is also a challenge. The Community Foundation works hard to support this program, both by connecting with donors like the Hermeier family and by making awards through our annual grant cycle.
You can help give glasses to kids who might not otherwise be able to access them - unlocking their chances at success in school, and in life. Please make a gift today!
