Professor Clarence Griep (pronounced Grip) taught U.S. History and Government at the University of Dubuque in the 1960’s and 70’s until his untimely death. He was a strong advocate for world peace, tolerance, and fairness. Professor Griep valued the importance of commitment to what one believes in. He was also a veteran of World War Two and very active in the Dubuque County Democrats, serving as Research Chair. The Clarence Griep Scholarship fund was transferred to the non-partisan not-for-profit Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque in 2007 with the goal of endowing it in perpetuity. The Clarence Griep Scholarship (CGS) Committee awards a $300 to 500 scholarship to a graduating senior from each Dubuque County high school (Beckman, Cascade, Hempstead, Senior, Wahlert and Western Dubuque). The scholarship is based on an application listing their academic achievements, involvement in activities both at school and in the community, and an essay.
