What is Great Give Day?
Great Give Day is a 24-hour, online giving event organized annually by the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque to grow philanthropy in its seven-county region, including Allamakee, Clayton, Clinton, Delaware, Dubuque, Jackson and Jones Counties. The minimum donation is $10 and there is no maximum. Bonus grants will be made available to amplify charitable donations. The goal is to inspire the community to come together for 24 hours to contribute as many charitable dollars as possible to support the work of local nonprofit organizations. Great Give Day is based on other successful giving days hosted by community foundations across the country.
When is Great Give Day?
Great Give Day takes place on Wednesday, May 21 from 12:00am CT - 11:59:59pm CT.
How does Great Give Day work?
Donors visit greatgiveday.org and use the donate button at the top of the main website to browse for organizations by location, cause/category or find a specific organization to make a gift. Donors can also connect to the site with a direct link sent to them by participating organizations via email or shared on social media. Donors looking to donate to a new organization or unsure who to select can search by the causes they love most.
Donors can give online beginning Thursday, May 1 through Wednesday, May 21 at 11:59:59 p.m. CT.
The Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque works with corporate partners, donors and affiliate foundations to secure bonus dollars to be awarded to participating nonprofits on Great Give Day through hourly prizes and grand prizes. The prize schedule will depend on the total bonus dollars raised and will be posted at www.GreatGiveDay.org once it is finalized.
What is the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque?

The Community Foundation hosts Great Give Day as a service to the nonprofits we support.
There are lots of great reasons to give on Great Give Day!
1. Help nonprofits leverage over $30,000 in prizes - For organizations with smaller annual budgets, additional prize money can be a game-changer!
2. Give easily - By partnering with the Mightycause technology platform, the Community Foundation provides a great user experience for donors and makes it easy to support your favorite organization(s).
3. Stay connected to your favorite organization and discover new ones - Each year, the Community Foundation hosts Great Give Day to amplify and raise awareness for local organizations. Thanks to extensive coverage by our media partners and individuals promoting the giving day online with the hashtag #GreatGiveDay, our community can learn about and get connected to the important work being done every day by local organizations.
4. Join the movement! Invest in a community where everyone can prosper. Giving is contagious, and you can help bring the community together by encouraging your friends and family to give back during Great Give Day.
There is no registration fee for eligible organizations to participate in Great Give Day. Access to the Mightycause platform for Great Give Day is paid for by the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, and the event is supported at no cost to participants or donors by many staff in the Foundation's impact, finance, development and communications teams. Fees on gifts are charged directly by credit card processors and Mightycause, and do not benefit the Community Foundation or its affiliates.
To ignite the maximum amount of generosity on Great Give Day, the Community Foundation invites individual and corporate sponsors to contribute to a prize pool to fund prize hours throughout the event. These contests drive momentum, spur friendly competition and motivate community members to give. Because corporate sponsorships qualify for the Endow Iowa 25% State Tax Credit, any prizes a nonprofit wins will be directed to its endowment fund, regardless of how it chooses to direct the rest of its Great Give Day gifts. For purposes of awarding prizes, multiple donations from one donor email address to the same nonprofit will count as one gift. Organizations cannot donate to themselves.
I ran into a technical issue on the platform and need help. How do I contact Mightycause directly?
A Mightycause support team member is happy to help with questions about using the Great Give Day website or direct you to the correct Community Foundation team member.
The Mightycause support team is available year-round, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. ET.
It is up to the organizations whether or not they choose to participate. If you don't see your favorite organization listed, we encourage you to contact them directly to make sure they are aware of Great Give Day. Organizations register to participate annually at GreatGiveDay.org.
For donating, no. You can complete your donation as a guest. However, we encourage you to create an account to easily access your donation history and receipts!
For fundraising, yes. Fundraisers will need to create an account in order to create an individual fundraising page. If a user visits an organization page on GreatGiveDay.org without being logged in first and clicks the "Fundraise" button, the first screen they are taken to is a log-in/sign-up screen. In order to have a fundraising page, it needs to be linked to a user account in the Mightycause platform.
Mightycause is the technology platform that powers Great Give Day. It is a mission-driven, employee-owned business that has served the nonprofit community by helping them with online fundraising and donor engagement since 2006. Mightycause has supported over 150,000 causes and has been the technology partner for hundreds of community-led Giving Days.
All donations must be paid by credit or debit card through the www.GreatGiveDay.org website to be counted in the day’s totals and qualify for matching funds. Only donations received through the Great Give Day website between 12 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Great Give Day will count towards a nonprofit’s Great Give Day total. Donors will be able to make early gifts in advance of Great Give Day beginning May 19.
Gifts made via the GreatGiveDay.org website will be subject to a 6% fee. The Community Foundation does not receive any portion of the donations made on Great Give Day. Fees are broken down as follows:
Donors will have the option to increase their gifts to cover these fees. Incentive prizes are not subject to fees.
How and when will organizations receive their Great Give Day donations?
Donations made via the Great Give Day platform are disbursed by the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque. Nonprofits will receive both their total gifts and matching funds/prizes in a lump sum within 6-8 weeks of the event.
Mightycause automatically sends an email receipt when you make a donation, but there are several reasons why you may not see it in your inbox. Your email provider may have sent it to your junk mail folder, so be sure to check there. Gmail may have routed your receipt to your “Purchases” tab, so you should check there if you’re a Gmail user. If you were donating as a guest, a typo in your email address could cause you to not receive your receipt. We’re happy to resend your receipt — just email Mightycause at support@mightycause.com from the email address you used to complete your donation and we’ll make sure you get it.
